The Solotex Twill Oversized Box Shirt is released every year. While it is based on a work shirt, it is not intended to be made as a work shirt.
"It's about how modern we can make a work shirt without it smelling too much like a work shirt. We keep the feel of the pockets and such, but there are double pockets and things like that."
What to keep and what to eliminate. The accumulation of those judgments shapes the contours of this shirt.
The pockets are retained, but their placement has changed.
"We intentionally placed our brand name here, and created a pocket on the side. The reason is that it's generally not considered good for staff to have their hands in their pockets, but I tend to do that quite a bit, so I made it a point to create a pocket on the side (laughs). It wasn't intentional, or rather, it happened by chance."
This is not a specification born from a blueprint, but one that emerged from my own habits. "It happened by chance," Mr. Minami laughs, but that chance directly connects to usability.
"There’s actually a pocket on the inside as well, so it feels more like throwing it over a T-shirt rather than just a shirt, making it more like a shirt jacket. I think it’s easy to layer and use in various ways."
It is neither a shirt nor a jacket. The abundance of pockets supports that ambiguous position.
Additionally, this shirt has a purposeful specification. Despite being long-sleeved, it has no cuffs.
"I find it a bit troublesome to hear comments about the sleeves being long or short. It started from the point that you can just roll them up to make them longer or shorter. So, there are no cuffs at all. If someone has long arms, they can use it as is, and if someone has shorter arms and it doesn't fit, they can roll it up to their liking, which is how this design came about."
A specification that started from "troublesome" has become freedom for the wearer. The theme of Graphpaper to eliminate the concept of size is embodied in these details.
