SEVEN BY SEVEN For Dice&Dice SHIRTS / JYUNYA KAWAKAMI INTERVIEW

Since the end of last year, we have had numerous meetings with the SEVEN BY SEVEN team, and we have completed two exclusive Dice&Dice shirts.
These are not just shirts we want to sell, but shirts we truly want to wear.
The TUCK SHIRT - Brushed linen - features a unique brushed texture that emerges with each wash, allowing you to enjoy its aging process.
The CRAZY PATTERN OPEN COLLAR SHIRT was made using luxurious vintage fabric, and we were able to produce it in a limited quantity.
In this exclusive collaboration, we interviewed designer Kawakami from SEVEN BY SEVEN about the fabric characteristics and the shape of the shirts, so we hope you take a look.
TUCK SHIRT - Brushed linen -
- Please tell us about the fabric used for the TUCK SHIRTS this time.
Kawakami (hereafter, Kawakami): This is a fabric I bought a few years ago, which was originally intended for a collection but ended up not being used.
The brushed, firm linen fabric has a volume that has not been featured in previous collections, and upon revisiting it, I felt it was fresh, so I decided to specially apply it to the TUCK SHIRT this time.
- The TUCK SHIRT has become an iconic item for SEVEN BY SEVEN; could you share its origins or any stories behind it?
Kawakami: It is based on an 80s vintage shirt that I wore often during my time living in America, which had a mysterious volume to it.
At that time, it was not a focus item in the vintage genre, but we started from scratch and re-created it as a modern new shirt.
- If you have any advice regarding the size of the shirt to wear, please share. Also, if there are any pants from this season that you think would match well, please let us know.
Kawakami: Since the fabric is slightly thicker, I think it can be worn with a lighter outerwear feel. It’s a plain and simple shirt, but it has a three-dimensional quality, so it looks great.
From this season's items, I think pairing it with jacquard woven original patterned pants would add some contrast.
At first glance, it looks basic, so I think it can be incorporated into various styles.
- What should we be careful about regarding the washing and storage methods for linen shirts, and how does this thickness of linen shirt change over time?
Kawakami: Since it has been washed after production, it won’t shrink. Personally, I hope people wear it often and wash it regularly.
For storage, linen is less prone to moth damage compared to wool, and it’s an item you can wear year-round, so I’d like you to keep it in your closet all year round.
As you wear and wash it repeatedly, the unique brushed texture of linen will increase, and when the firmness diminishes, it will develop a wonderful character.
CRAZY PATTERN OPEN COLLAR SHIRT
- Please tell us about the characteristics of the fabric used this time and why it was made into a crazy pattern.
Kawakami: This is made from Indian khadi cotton that I sourced during a buying trip to America long ago. At that time, I purchased it not for a specific project but because the fabric had an amazing atmosphere.
When washed, khadi cotton reveals a gentle texture unique to handwoven fabric, but I wanted a little edge to it, so I made it into a crazy pattern with an open collar, and it turned out to fit quite well.
- Khadi cotton is often heard about; could you explain it in detail?
Kawakami: The khadi cotton used this time is produced entirely by hand, starting from spinning the yarn.
The yarn generated by human hands is finished into fabric using hand-weaving tools, and the unique lumps and looseness of the fabric created in that process give it a refreshing texture typical of hot countries.
In the mid-1800s, the industrial revolution in Britain led to the mechanization of clothing production, but India has maintained traditional fabric production methods in response to that trend.
Though it has decreased over time, this technique is still passed down, and rare khadi cotton is produced, which is now widely used by high-end brands overseas.
- Although it is made into an open collar shirt, if you have any stories about the shape's characteristics or its origins, please share.
Kawakami: I based it on the standard open collar shirt from SBS and applied the fabric to it.
Given the thickness of the fabric used this time, I thought it was best to apply it to a shirt.
I had the factory sew it in various variations, and we created a completely assorted open collar shirt that is one of a kind in the world.
- If you have any advice regarding the size feel.
Kawakami: Since it has a nice handwoven fabric feel, I think it’s fine to wear it a bit loosely.
The sleeve length is set longer, which I believe fits very well with the current silhouette.
- If you have any pants from this season that you think would pair well with this, please let us know.
Kawakami: I think shorts made from Supima fabric would fit the relaxed image well.
It can also be worn as streetwear with denim or chinos, or you can enjoy wearing it with loose pants and accessories like a Panama hat.
