& DICE & DICE supported by TOKYO DESIGN STUDIO New Balance (hereinafter TDSNBXDXD) held an installation themed around upcycling from October 6 (Wed) to October 25 (Mon), 2021, featuring graphic designer and artist Yoshihisa Tanaka, who works under the name Nerhol.
The initiative began at the New Balance concept store "T-HOUSE New Balance" located in Nihonbashi Hamacho, Tokyo, starting with research on washi paper production using sneaker scraps and waste materials, which has now made its way to TDSNBXDXD. In addition to works such as shoes and shoeboxes, we explored creating a system that allows the produced shoeboxes to circulate with high added value, aiming to transform awareness and values regarding new upcycling.
During the period, in collaboration with Japan's first sneaker wash specialty store Licue & Sneakers (located in Shibuya PARCO, Tokyo), we offered a sneaker wash service for all New Balance products, returning the washed sneakers in upcycled shoeboxes created for this installation to those who used the wash service in-store.

Yoshihisa Tanaka
Graphic designer, Nerhol. Born in 1980 in Shizuoka Prefecture. He practices a wide range of design from bookbinding to signage planning for cultural facilities, based on the philosophy of creating sustainable cultural value. Recent works include the VI plan for the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, bookshop POST, The Tokyo Art Book Fair, Takeo Paper Show, and designs for the Japan Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition.
He also works as part of the artist duo Nerhol with sculptor Ryuta Iida, with notable solo exhibitions including 'Index' at Foam Photography Museum (Netherlands), 'Promenade' at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and 'Interview, Portrait, House and Room' at Youngeun Museum Contemporary Art (South Korea).
Licue & Sneakers
Japan's first sneaker wash specialty store opened on the 4th floor of Shibuya PARCO in Tokyo, which was renovated and reopened in November 2020.
Operated by Apish, which runs a 100% water-wash cleaning store "Licue" and a laundry service "WASH&FOLD".
