Y.&SONS x Dice&Dice Plant-Dyed Fan
In 1899, the 32nd year of the Meiji era, we commissioned Sugiyama Emido, a specialty store for fans, calendars, and lottery tickets, to create this fan.
This fan is a carefully crafted piece dyed with plant-based dyes, made by folding and gathering individual sheets of kozo handmade paper to match the design. The logo symbolizing Dice&Dice is embossed in silver, and the handmade paper is dyed with walnut and olive, expressing a gradient through iron mordanting.
The washi paper used is the finest quality, extremely thin paper made for fans by Masashi Sawamura, designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset of Japan, "Hon-Mino Paper" preservation society. Additionally, the fan ribs are made from high-quality materials sourced from Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture.
The colors found in the fields and gardens come from the leaves, bark, and fruits, which are rich in hues. These colors are harvested at the peak of their maturation and boiled for dyeing. The process of mordanting (fixing and developing the color) also creates different colors from a single plant, which is one of its charms.
Enjoy the softness and warmth of washi paper, along with the natural colors and pleasant breeze derived from plants.
