New Balance TDS Niobium Concept 1
TOKYO DESIGN STUDIO New Balance has revived the "Niobium Concept 1" for the first time since the original model was released in 2020.
Using the sole unit of the MT801, New Balance's best-selling trail running model, the upper features a breathable waterproof material, eVent®, in a bootie style, and can be transformed by swapping between two types of mule-style linings, creating TDS's concept shoe "Niobium." The name is derived from the metal niobium, with atomic number 41 and symbol "Nb." It has a melting point that exceeds platinum, and while the atoms are extremely strongly bonded, it is a rare metal that possesses both durability and transformability, able to take on a rainbow of hues through surface processing and be easily molded even at low temperatures — this "beauty" and "variability" is expressed in TDS's concept "Niobium." The Niobium Concept 1 can transform into three stages of footwear: waterproof boots that excel in wet conditions and bad weather, outdoor mules that are easy to put on and take off while on the move, and indoor slippers. The craftsmanship that New Balance has cultivated over 120 years has been updated to fit modern living, designed as a tool that responds to multiple scenes of lifestyle. In this revival release, two new colors are added to the lineup: WASHED NAVY, which evokes a sense of aging, and BUTTER YELLOW, which gives a soft and fresh impression.
