YAECA - Edo Wind Chime
When glass was introduced from the Netherlands during the Edo period, the Japanese people, who were only familiar with wooden and earthenware vessels, were greatly astonished by its beauty.
The imported items were expensive and not for the common people, but eventually, the method of glass manufacturing was brought to Edo via Nagasaki, leading to the creation of glass products at accessible prices, gradually permeating among the people.
Among these, the wind chime captured everyone's heart.
A glass ball and tube made by hand-blowing are swayed by the natural wind, producing sound. Originally, in China, it was used as a tool for divination by hanging it in bamboo groves and interpreting the sound it made, but the people of Edo enjoyed the sound of the wind chime itself, feeling the breeze and coolness.
This Edo wind chime is made using the same method as in the past, with both the ball and tube hand-blown, but everything except the hanging string is transparent. It is a modern wind chime that fits well in both Japanese and Western-style rooms.
